Radiation Protection to Supervisor Level

Two Day (16 hour) Course Visual Inspection

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Participants in this 24 hour course will have already completed the training course for Basic Radiation Safety. This course is intended for persons who may be appointed as radiation protection supervisors for site radiography or compound facilities.

COURSE CONTENT

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. At the conclusion of this course the student should be able to:

  2. Have an understanding of the basic concepts of ionising radiations;

  3. Be familiar with the terminology used in radiation protection;

  4. Have a detailed understanding of the main requirements of the following;

    • The Radioactive Substance Act 1993;

    • The Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999;

    • The Approved Code of Practice;

    • Associated Guidance Notes;

    • The Transport Regulations;

    • The ionising Radiations (Outside Workers) Regulations 1993;

  5. Have an understanding of the potential hazards (health effects) associated with the use of ionising radiation;

  6. Have an understanding of the principles of practical protection to minimise exposure to ionising radiation;

  7. Have an understanding of the good working practices required to keep radiation doses as low as reasonably practicable;

  8. Understand the role of the RPS and be aware of the various records that need to be maintained;

  9. Be able to calculate source outputs and dose rates, and carry out inverse square law and shielding calculations; and

  10. Have a detailed understanding of emergency procedures.
