Practical Eddy Current Phase Analysis

Three Day (24 hour) Advanced Course Eddy Current Phase Analysis

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This 24 hour course is designed for those technicians and engineers already practising eddy current inspections and qualified or experienced to a Level II standard. It includes complete evaluation and breakdown of factors effecting impedance and how variables influence two dimensional impedance plane displays. Factors considered include probe parameters, frequency, conductivity, lift-off, paint thickness, material thinning, permeability, conductivity and cladding.

To supplement the theory, practical examples are presented to develop and improve proficiency in performing inspections, and to illustrate how basic principles are applied to diagnose real signals. The degree of scientific detail in this course is primarily directed towards Level III certification applicants. It is assumed that the student is familiar with basic electrical theory and the elements of basic algebra and calculus.

COURSE CONTENT

  • Eddy current fundamentals.

  • Electrical circuits and probe impedance.

  • Instrumentation.

  • Testing with surface probes.

  • Surface probe signal analysis.

  • Testing of tubes and cylindrical components.

  • Tube testing - signal analysis.

  • Metallurgical properties and testing ferromagnetic materials.

  • Magnetic properties and testing magnetic materials.

  • Supporting information.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. At the end of this course the student should be able to:

  2. Select correct probes to optimise probability of detection (POD);

  3. Select correct frequencies to optimise probability of detection (POD);

  4. Understand the effects of discont-inuitiesin calibration and calibrating standards to develop signal separation from other factors;

  5. Recognise what tests are required to differentiate between significant signals and false indications;

  6. Understand how to estimate depth of real defects and the reliability ofsuch processes; and

  7. Pass the end of course test.
